The ancient Agora was the fore runner of the town square. Citizens of Athens would come here to shop, talk politics, work out in the new gymnasium, or hang around one of the many fountains. The Agora is big so if it's hot make sure you have water so you can really enjoy yourself. The reconstructed Stoa shows you an example of a covered market place and also houses the sites museum.
After leaving the ancient ruins, we wandered slightly off the main tourism strip and out of the market (Plaka). There is still graffiti all around, and you have to remember that just because something looks dirty, doesn't mean it's all bad and unsafe, (though always be aware of your surroundings). There is a great vibe that modern Athens has. Hip cafes will locals, and a great vintage/alternative scene.
