I'd be lying if I said that every travel experience I've had was easy, uplifting, and accomplished with a genuine smile on my face. Or that I wasn't wary about encountering certain aspects of certain cultures, or even scared sometimes. (although I can't think of too many examples to the latter) Travel is a mixed bag and there's nothing you can do to change it...externally anyway.
It's Different Not Strange- Hopefully you're traveling with at least a mild interest of experiencing new things, so if you are congrats! No matter where you go, what you do, or who you meet, things may be vastly different, but few things are actually strange. Experiencing and observing different things is a very good way to understand the culture you're in and even your own culture! Mind blown!
Be Positively Pessimistic- Bad things happen to good travelers. Rooms won't be as advertised, sights might be less than spectacular, and some awesome stuff is closed on Mondays. You can plan and research to make everything perfect until you're blue in the face, or you can accept it! We've been in some pretty rough spots, waking up to a floor full of ants, getting locked out of our hostel, or being hopelessly lost on a foreign transit system. The best advice we have to dealing with it is remembering that this terrible moment will be a hilarious story as soon as we're through to the other side!
Believe You Can Do More With Less- I could go on for quite some time bragging about cool travel accomplishments, but my proudest achievement is letting go of stuff and being ok with it. When we first started traveling we both had huge backpacks filled to the gills with everything we thought we'd need Four months later unpacking at home there were lots of stuff I pulled out and hadn't needed. The next time we traveled, I made the same mistake. The time after that I thought I'd beaten it, but no. It wasn't really until our last trip that I felt like I brought what I actually needed. Not only did my backpack feel lighter so did my mind!
